Beat the Flu This Winter!

Survive and Thrive! Fitness and Health Tips to Stay Strong and Fit!

It is unfortunate that some bugs or viruses will enter your body at some stage but when they get there - 2 things will happen!
1. Your immune system will fight them off and recover or
2. The virus will survive and multiply and produce colds and flu! This article looks at some great practical tips to boost your immunity this winter and stay strong and happy!

NUTRITION
FRUIT AND VEGES (5+ SERVES PER DAY): The first and easiest thing you can do to boost your immunity is improve your nutrition. Seek and eat lots of fruit and vegetables! Aim for more than 5 serves per day! They contain natural disease fighting compounds called phytochemicals and antioxidants which can enhance your immune system.
WATER (> 2 - 3 LITRES PER DAY): Water is also a big help to cleanse the body and remove toxins, including germs. By keeping body systems well hydrated, you can enhance your virus-fighting potential. Aim to drink 2 - 3 litres per day or more!
SOUPS Soups can be a great way to get your vegetables, nutrients and water! adding some GARLIC will also help your immunity.
SUPPLEMENTS To support a healthy diet you can also try taking a MULTIVITAMIN and extra VITAMIN C and ECHINACEA.

TRAINING
EXERCISE (>3 x per week): This is what has really helped me! Regular and consistent exercise! The benefits of all different types of exercise are too numerous to start on here but take it for granted that regular exercise stimulates the body to fight off invading germs and viruses. Moving your butt will also help you process any invasions by stimulating your metabolism and helping your body get rid of these bugs faster!

LIFESTYLE
SLEEP (>8 hours/night): Probably the most important and overlooked lifestyle factor that can be easily improved for greater immunity and health is sleep. I have gone through periods myself - testing how tough I am by how little I can sleep and still work, train and play however this is FOLLY. For good health and to boost immunity change your lifestyle to include more than 8 hours of sleep per night. Your health and quality of life will greatly improve!
STRESS: Stress comes in many different forms and from many different places. Identify your 3 main sources of stress and reduce them! It's YOUR LIFE! (some sources of stress include: work?, bad communication/relationships?, smoking?, poor nutrition? no exercise? your own bad attitudes?)
CLEAN: Stay clean and avoid germs by washing your hands regularly. Use a towel at the gym and avoid sharing cups, plates or utensils.
There's plenty more you can shield yourself form illness and disease but mastering these points would make for a great winter!

5 Best Affordable Ways to Get Rid of Stretch Marks

Do you feel uncomfortable wearing shorts or taking off your clothes because your stretch marks are easily noticeable? Although these scars are not going to have any adverse effect on your health but they sure make you feel insecure and self-conscious. So, it is understandable that you want to get rid of stretch marks in the shortest possible time. Before getting rid of them, you should know why you have them in the first place.
Stretch marks can be a result of anything from pregnancy to weight gain and building muscle mass too fast. When the skin is stretched too much, the supporting structure in the dermis which consists of collagen and elastin breaks down. This will make your skin less elastic. Stretch marks usually are red or purple in color in the initial stage. They will gradually fade to white or silver streaks on the skin.
You can opt for surgical methods to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. But what if you can’t afford it? Fortunately, there are several ways to make those ugly threads less noticeable without spending too much money.

1. Reduce Stretch Marks With Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is a powerful moisturizer and healer of any skin problems including stretch marks. Just apply it daily and watch it work. It’s a little sticky but if you let it dry and infuse into your skin you’ll see your skin problems disappear.
It has been used for many skin problems throughout the ages by every native person where aloe vera grows. And it grows in a lot of countries. It has the ability to strengthen the skin tissue and promote healing of scars, stretch marks, and other skin blemishes.
In a study by Dr. Ivan E. Danhof, the foremost authority on aloe vera, found aloe helps the cells heal faster than normal. The dermis layer, where stretch marks occur, is the layer of skin in charge of making collagen. Collagen is the skin’s protein and aloe speeds up building collagen. That’s what helps heal your stretch marks.
When you apply aloe to your stretch marks it not only builds more collagen but it also adds needed moisture. One of aloe vera properties is an anti-inflammatory so you can use it on other swollen skin to help them heal plus other scars you might have. Dr. Danhof study showed how aloe adds moisture to the epidermis (outer layer) as it is absorbed into the dermis where the stretch marks are. It helps to heal the damaged skin by rebuilding the cells.
Used once a day you can see results in 6 to 8 months. Remember that stretch marks are a scar that needs to be healed and that takes time. Adding vitamin E with the aloe will rebuild the tissue on older scars. Patience is needed to heal stretch marks with aloe vera.

2. Protect Collagen And Elastin With Grape Seed Oil

Grape seed oil contains powerful antioxidant and is used to improve healthy skin in skin care products. The antioxidants protect collagen and elastin from the damaging effects of free radicals.
Grape seed oil contains OPC, Oligo proanthocyanidins, which is more effective than vitamin E and more effective than vitamin C. It also has all the essential fatty acids you need for regenerating new skin cells, making your stretch marks less obvious.

3. Reduce Appearance Of Stretch Marks With Argan Oil

A native of Morocco, the Argen tree produces an oil extracted from the trees fruit. It has been used for many generations for cooking, medicines, and cosmetics. It has more vitamin E than olive oil and is rich in the essential fatty acids the body requires. The fatty acids include oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic which the body uses to regenerate tissue or the damaged skin of the stretch mark.
The properties of Argan oil help the body restore and regenerate back to its normal state. It also contains saponins. They are what helps the body restore the lipid layer of the skin and regenerate the skin where the stretch marks are. It helps rebuild the damaged skin.

4. Treating Stretch Marks With Retin-A

The use of Retin-A with Tretinoin has been shown to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. A study done by dermatologist shows these creams work but you have to get them from your doctor with a prescription.
Tretinoin, or Retin-A removes dead cells and releases the outer layer of skin. It’s a derivative of vitamin A; Tretinoin works better than vitamin A in its natural state. It penetrates the dermis as it thins the out layer of skin, plus your collagen level increases as it pumps up the area where the stretch marks are and diminishes the look of the stretch marks.
There is a danger if you use too much, so take the advice of your doctor on the right amount of Tretinoin to use. It may cause swelling and redness and sensitivity to sunlight as well as sting a little when you put it on.
Another side effect is thickening of the skin as your collagen level increases. Tretinoin is better used when the appearance of stretch marks show up rather than on older stretch marks. You should not use it if you’re pregnant or nursing. Don’t take more vitamin A when taking Tretinoin, more is not necessarily better.

5. Repair Stretch Marks With Protein

Adding more protein to your diet will help your body to produce more collagen because what causes the stretch marks is the lack of collagen and elastin in the skin. Protein will help build up the tissue to repair the stretch marks with the use of collagen. Add more lean meats, soy, tofu, nuts, and other protein rich foods to your diet. It will help build the collagen to repair the under lying skin damaged by stretch marks.
Whichever treatment you choose to get rid of your stretch marks will help but be sure to use them long enough to work. Your stretch marks are not going to disappear in a week and maybe not even in a couple of months. The body takes a little while to heal scars because it has to grow new skin but they can be healed. Practice your patience and use the treatment everyday and you will see an improvement.

10 fast skin fixes: get the gorgeous, glowing skin you want!

Hey, you! Want clear, glowing, gorgeous skin? We thought so. That's why GL teamed with skin care experts Renee Rouleau, of the Renee Rouleau Skin Spa, and Annet King, educator at The International Dermal Institute, for a crash course in the secrets to great skin....
1- Wash your face way before you go to bed. If you wait until you're ready to hit the sack, you'll be too tired to wash up, and research shows skin repairs itself best around 10 p.m. So let skin breathe easy long before you start snoozing.

2- Wear sunscreen every day, year-round. Botox bites. So use a moisturizer that has an SPF 15 or higher (try Eucerin Skin Renewal SPF 15 Day Lotion, $10, drugstores). UV rays can do their damage while you're sitting in class, riding in the car or walking the dog.

3- Be nice to your face. Picking, poking and squeezing force bacteria deeper into the skin, resulting in scarring and further breakouts. Yuck.

4- Stop thinking that if your skin feels tight it must be clean. Tight skin isn't clean skin--it's dry skin. If you're rushing to dab on moisturizer after you wash, time to find a cleanser that won't leave you high and dry. Normal and combination skin will benefit most from a gel formula (we love Nivea Visage Refreshing Cleansing Gel, $6, drugstores). Got dry or sensitive skin? Go for a creamy cleanser. Either way, choose a low foaming formula. More lather=more drying. Less lather=less drying.

5- Banish breakouts. If you've got major acne, an acne face wash is for you (we like Clearesil Total Control 5-in-1 Acne Cleanser and Moisturizer, $9, drugstores). If you just get spot breakouts, avoid acne washes. They worsen skin by drying out the clear parts and allowing dead skin-cell buildup. The buildup traps oil under skin, leading to more clogged pores and breakouts. So use spot treatments (Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment, $6.50, drugstores).

6- Keep shine at bay midday. The ugly truth? You can't stop or slow down oil production. The beautiful solution? Blotting papers! They instantly pull oil off your skin. We like Sephora's Roll-Up Blotting Papers, $8, sephora.com.

7- Wash your face after you do your 'do. Almost all conditioners, hair sprays and mousses contain ingredients that can clog pores. So (carefully) wash your face after using hair products.
8- Clean your makeup brushes weekly. Bacteria and oil can build up which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. Use a mild soap (Nature's Gate Organics liquid soaps, $6, drugstores) and cold water to carefully wash out brushes, and rinse thoroughly. Toss cosmetics sponges after a few uses to prevent the spread of bacteria.

9- Change pillowcases often. As you sleep, bacteria and oil collect on your pillowcase and are reintroduced to your skin the following night. So invest in a stack of nice pillowcases, and wash them with a dye- and fragrance-free laundry detergent, like Tide Free.

10- Get your beauty rest! Eight hours should do the trick. Sleep not only keeps undereye circles away but, at night, your body most actively rids itself of toxins that might otherwise wreak havoc with your skin. Z's also reduce stress, the top ache aggravator!
Q&A
Should I exfoliate my face? I've heard that pads and scrubs are really hard on your skin.
You're smart to steer clear of buffing pads and exfoliants that contain crushed oatmeal, almond or apricot pieces. These are natural ingredients, but the grains have sharp edges that can harm skin, forcing bacteria deeper into your face and causing irritation and breakouts. Instead, get rid of dead skin by using a gentle scrub with perfectly round grains. Try Aveeno's Skin Brightening Daily Scrub ($7, drugstores).
